HISTORY

Situated between St. Louis and Memphis, Poplar Bluff was one of the earliest permanent settlements in the county along the Natchitoches Trail. When Butler County was officially organized in 1849, Poplar Bluff quickly became its center of population.

RECREATION

The Black River Coliseum features some of the best entertainment in Southeast Missouri. This state-of-the-art facility in downtown Poplar Bluff on the banks of the Black River seats up to 5,000 for concerts and sporting events. There is also an aquatic center at the arena. The Bloodworth House, Epps-Houts Museum, Margaret Harwell Art Museum, Moark Regional Railroad Museum and Poplar Bluff Historical Museum are also must-sees in the area.

For those who enjoy the outdoors there are plenty of offerings. Keener Springs Recreation Area features opportunities for any number of outdoor activities in an attractive, wooded setting. Lake Wappapello includes more than 44,000 acres of public lands and water, while 150,000 acres of public lands are contained within Mark Twain National Forest. Mingo Wildlife Refuge provides food and shelter for migratory birds. There are 134 miles of clean, clear rivers for water sports within the Ozark National Scenic Riverways and Ozark Ridge Golf Course is an 18-hole, championship course open to the public.
